It’s the time of year to break-out the sweets! From the tasty treats of Halloween (…I enjoy strolling the post-Halloween candy aisles at Publix), to the delight of a Christmas cookie at first sight. No matter the case, my #1 holiday must-have is a good ‘ole slice of pie. Whether you opt for the Midwestern take on chocolate cream pie or the ever-classic pumpkin pie. To seek out Miami-Dade’s best, one MUST look no further than the famed Fireman Derek’s Bake Shop.

Fireman Derek’s Bake Shop came about as the brainchild of City of Miami firefighter, Derek Kaplan. Following his first attempts at mastering pie-baking at the age of 15, Derek has transitioned his love of pie into his cozy little establishment along North Miami Avenue.

These days, the Fireman Derek sensation has allowed him the opportunity to hobnob with the likes of Supermodel, Chrissy Teigen. Together, they’ve co-hosted the Fireman Derek’s Midnight Breakfast at the Food Network & Cooking Channel South Beach Wine & Food Festival.

During our first-ever visit to this pie powerhouse, we realized one must be blind to miss it. The colorful murals that adorn the façade of Fireman Derek’s Bake Shop, indeed reflect the inventiveness of their baked goods. On this trip, we opted for a slice of the ever-classic pumpkin pie, as earlier discussed (…I mean come on, it’s October!). And before leaving, we devoured an incredibly delicious, yet meticulously artsy slice of their Nutella pie.

Must I bore you with details while you pour over these tantalizing photos? Why not? Although rich, this melt-in-your-mouth goodness could be experienced for hours. From the first bite, the chocolatey rush that flowed out of this particular slice of pie, is something only experienced while consuming authentic churros set
against a romantic Seville sunset. You see what I’m talking about?

And the menu doesn’t stop there. My Midwestern self couldn’t resist the savory goodness of Derek’s homemade chicken pot pies. Let me just say, Grandma, you may have some competition!

Although we aren’t blessed with the cold winter days of snuggling-up over a mug of hot chocolate here in Miami, it’s because of Fireman Derek’s Bake Shop that we’re allowed to experience all the sweetness of the American holiday season. So whether you’re Miami-based or here to escape the winter blues, swing by Fireman Derek’s Bake Shop for your own slice of holiday sweetness!
